This type of insurance policy takes into account the unique nature of the fitness industry, whilst catering to the specific needs and requirements of the self-employed Fitness Instructor.
The function of a Fitness Instructor is not only to help clients get fit but at times to offer additional advice and support, possibly with regards to general exercising and healthier eating.
It is because of this duty towards clients, it is essential that the Fitness Instructor makes adequate provision for the essential investment in insurance.
Central to any Fitness Instructor Insurance package would be both Public Liability protection as well as Professional Indemnity insurance. Should a client suffer injury resulting from a breach of duty as the Fitness Instructor, any resultant damages or legal costs that could be incurred would be adequately provided for under the Public Liability insurance.
The purpose of the Professional Indemnity cover is to protect the instructor for possible damages and legal costs should a claim be made by a client resulting from injury or damages due to possible negligent advice or tuition given to the client by the instructor.
It is unlikely that a Fitness Instructor will require cover for equipment, unless they operate from their own personal gym. It is more likely however that they will provide their services at either a registered fitness club or in certain circumstances, the private gym of individual clients.
However when considering the extent of cover required by each Instructor, this fact needs to be taken into consideration along with the number of clients that are catered for and whether the person operates as a personal trainer or group instructor.
Often the Fitness Instructor may sell vitamins and other health-related products to clients and if this is the case, the Instructor would be directly responsible to the client should illness or injury resulting from the provision of those products. With this in mind therefore, a Products Liability addition to the overall policy portfolio would protect the Instructor against a possible claim for damages and associated legal expenses.
If an Instructor in employees assistants, albeit maybe only on a part-time basis, the Fitness Instructor will need to arrange Employers Liability insurance to cover his legal liabilities in relation to potential injuries and/or damages to employees during their course of employment.
As the list of clients grows larger when the business expands, a self-employed Fitness Instructor then needs to start considering other additional insurance, which may have an ongoing effect on the business, should damage or injury occurred.
These could include such seemingly insignificant insurances such as damage to computers and the cost of retrieving data they may contain; money insurance in the event that cash is stolen during the course of business the most important and probably the most expensive of all, is Personal Accident and Illness insurance. After all, if a Fitness Instructor is either injured or suffers from a serious illness, they are unable to undertake their profession which immediately affects their income.
